by Jana Sanchez Consumer advocate R a l p h Nader spoke to a gathering of Harris County political activists, which included students f rom area colleges, at the Tidelands II Motor Inn on Tuesday, August 21. The visit was one part of Nader's present effort to launch a statewide voter education and registration project. Nader has a long history of outspokenness in politics and has been a pioneer in public interest law, p a r t i c u l a r l y c o n s u m e r advocacy. He first came to public attention when he published his hook. Unsafe at Any Speed, which exposed defects in General Motors cars. His better known books include Working on the System: A Manual for Citizen's Access to Federal Agencies, Action for a Change. Taming the Giant Corporation, The Menace of Atomic Energy, a n d The Consumer and Corporate Accountability. The public interest and consumer advocacy groups that he has founded include the Center for Responsive Law, the Center for Auto Safety, the Project for Corporate Responsibilities, and the Public Interest Research Group, also known as PIRG.
